Button picks the maintenance latch instead of the paid rank gate and triggers a system note for noncombat utility....
The first turnstile charged Juno for surviving.
A brass arm swung across her stomach the moment she limped into Turnstile Hall. The rank display above it flashed ONE STAR TOLL REQUIRED, then recalculated with a cruel little chime.
ZERO-STAR PARTY PENALTY: ADDITIONAL RESCUE DEPOSIT.
Juno grabbed the rail before the gate could shove her back toward the Laundry Crypt. "I don't have star credit."
"Neither do I," Theo said.
"You are the one it hates."
"That is becoming a brand problem."
The hall was all polished tile and municipal cruelty: six turnstiles, a ceiling full of cameras, and a help kiosk sealed behind glass. Behind them, the service door thumped as something wet tested the frame. Theo kept his phone raised so the stream caught the toll panel, Juno's trapped body, and the timer counting down from ninety seconds.
Captain Calder Voss appeared on the kiosk screen in five-star armor so clean it looked rendered. "Candidate Vale, remain in place. Licensed extraction is inbound."
Mara muttered, "Inbound where? I see no team on lobby cameras."
Theo said, "Captain, the gate is billing her while you talk."
"Because you dragged an eliminated candidate into a rank-locked corridor. Step away and accept breach notation."
Juno's hand tightened on the rail. "If he steps away, this thing pulls me back."
Voss looked at her like an inconvenient subtitle. "Miss Pike, Arclight can settle your extraction status after safety review."
"I am done being reviewed in rooms that eat people," she snapped.
The chat clipped that. Mara pinned it under LIVING ROOKIE REFUSES EXTRACTION REVIEW. The viewer count climbed again, but the three-second delay made every warning arrive after the turnstile had already moved. Theo needed something the system would dismiss as too small to forbid.
Button tugged his hoodie seam.
Theo followed the wraith's tiny brass eyes to a maintenance latch below the toll reader. It was painted the same color as the wall, its screw head worn by years of janitor keys.
"Wrong door?" Theo asked.
Button clicked once. Correct.
Theo dropped flat on the tile and shoved the phone against the floor, giving the stream a sideways view of his face and the latch. "Captain Voss, is the maintenance panel part of the paid rank gate?"
Voss's jaw flexed. "Tampering with tutorial infrastructure is a breach."
"That was not the question."
"You are not authorized."
"Still not the question."
Button slipped into the latch. The wraith did not pick the lock like a heroic rogue. It remembered being fastened, unfastened, worried loose by cold fingers and cheap thread. The screw turned because small things knew how to come undone.
SYSTEM NOTE: NONCOMBAT UTILITY FUNCTION DETECTED.
The maintenance panel popped open. Inside, a red lever read JANITOR RELEASE: NO STAR TOLL. Theo pulled it.
The brass arm lifted off Juno's stomach. She stumbled forward into him, shaking with rage rather than weakness.
The help kiosk spat a receipt.
RESCUE SERVICE INITIATED. CHARGE: THEO VALE. REASON: ZERO-STAR BREACH.
Theo held the receipt to the phone. "You billed me for rescuing someone you said was eliminated."
Voss leaned closer to his camera. "You created the liability."
"No. I created the footage."
That landed harder than Theo expected. The chat did not explode into jokes. It started matching the receipt number against public complaints Mara pulled from failed-rookie forums. Three hits appeared before the turnstile timer expired.
Behind them, the service door split. A drain imp shoved one arm through, safety pin glinting.
Juno grabbed the receipt from Theo's fingers and slapped it against the kiosk glass. "If this is a rescue, open the exit."
The system hesitated. Button braced both tiny arms against the maintenance latch.
The far turnstile unlocked, not to the lobby, but to a narrow white corridor labeled BILLING DESK.
Theo laughed once, breathless and cold. "Of course the dungeon has accounting."
Voss's screen went dark before his expression could betray anything useful.
