Theo raises the Lint Chorus from a dryer trap and proves household spirits can affect tutorial machinery. Juno app...
The first washer lunged before Theo's feet cleared the threshold.
Its round door snapped open on rows of enamel teeth, and a rope of gray socks whipped around his ankle. The stream jolted as he hit wet tile. Above the room, the tutorial objective bloomed in clean blue letters.
CAST FIVE-STAR CLEANSE. PURIFY ALL MACHINES.
"I am zero-star," Theo shouted, scraping his heel against the drain. "Who wrote this, a motivational poster?"
Button skittered from his hoodie to the washer latch and stabbed its tiny arms into the hinge. The sock-rope loosened for half a breath. Chat's three-second delay made the warning arrive after the bite: LEFT MACHINE MOVED.
The left machine rammed him in the ribs.
Foam burst across the lens. Theo kept the phone angled upward because Mara had drilled that into him: panel, hazard, timestamp. The timestamp blinked 22:14:09 while the washer tried to drag him toward a drain wide enough for a person.
Then someone under the floor screamed.
Not ghost-screamed. Living lungs. Panic and detergent.
Theo jammed his broken sneaker against the washer mouth. "Mara, did the lobby say anyone else entered?"
"Lobby display shows one candidate," Mara said. Her voice clipped hard. "You only."
"Wrong." Theo yanked a fistful of lint from the drain grate. It came away warm, threaded with hair and blue uniform fiber. "Wake up, little mess."
The lint shivered. Tiny gray faces opened inside it, dozens of them, all blinking with dryer-static eyes. The Lint Chorus did not speak in words at first. It clung to Theo's wrist and pointed every fiber toward the drain.
SYSTEM NOTE: HOUSEHOLD SPIRIT FUNCTION UNREGISTERED.
"Register this," Theo said. "Clog."
The Chorus dove into the drain. The suction coughed, gagged, and spat up a girl in rookie coveralls. She slammed onto the tile beside him, coughing detergent foam, one hand locked around a broken safety badge.
The objective panel flickered.
OPTIONAL RESCUE DETECTED.
Lyra's voice came through a ceiling speaker. "Candidate Vale, step away from eliminated tutorial debris."
The girl pushed herself up on one shaking elbow. "My name is Juno Pike."
Theo put the phone close enough to catch her face and the lobby display reflected in a soap-slick steel door. On that reflection, JUNO PIKE was already listed under ELIMINATED, time-stamped two minutes earlier.
Juno saw it. Her eyes went flat with terror. "They told us eliminated meant extracted."
"Apparently it means drain snack," Theo said, because if he stopped joking his hands would shake too hard to hold the stream.
Chat started tagging the split frame: JUNO ALIVE, BOARD SAYS DEAD. Mara pinned only the clean clips and muted the viewers yelling fake. "Theo, keep her talking. Living witness beats a room full of rumors."
The washers answered with a synchronized spin cycle. The whole Laundry Crypt tilted toward the drain. The blue objective kept demanding five-star magic he did not have.
Juno grabbed Theo's sleeve. "I can pay extraction insurance if you get me out."
"Do not offer Arclight money while a machine is chewing your shoe."
"Then what do you want?"
Theo looked at the Lint Chorus clogging the drain with brave, filthy bodies. "Tell the stream what objective your contract showed."
Juno swallowed foam. "Stop the drain before the washers flood. No cleanse spell. No solo entry."
The panel sparked. For one second the hidden objective bled through beneath the fake one: PREVENT ROOKIE LOSS.
Button clicked the washer latch shut. The Lint Chorus packed the drain until the suction died. Water surged back through the machines, lifting the soap scum into a white wave. Theo shoved Juno onto a dryer and climbed after her as the nearest washer swallowed its own sock-rope.
SYSTEM CREDIT: SMALL OBJECT SPIRIT PERFORMED TUTORIAL FUNCTION.
The room went still except for Juno coughing and the chat bounty chimes stacking like coins.
Then the lobby reflection updated again.
JUNO PIKE: ELIMINATED.
Theo wiped foam from the lens and held the living girl in frame. "Mara?"
"Already clipped," she said. "And the city can count to one."
