Cassia accepts her first reset debt tremor to preserve Tavi's corrected state. Ronan wins a kill bonus but loses a...
Ronan's knife struck the Glass Triage Hall partition hard enough to frost the pane with cracks. On the other side, Tavi Or slid down the wall under a tag that could not decide whether to print black or green. The Host Bell rang twice, delighted, and tripled every red number floating above the duel circle.
"Kill bonus round," it announced. "Confirmed eliminations receive immediate rank increase. Team-save credit will be assessed after reset debt."
Cassia Rowe felt the word debt in her bones before the system explained it. Her right hand shook harder. The tremor climbed into her elbow, then into her jaw, a borrowed vibration from some future bill. Tavi's corrected state was still there under the false black ink, but the Bell was prying at it.
Mara stood at Cassia's left, eyes on three clocks at once. "Duel timer is four minutes. Door timer is six. Tavi's tag is pulsing every nine seconds."
"The Bell is making him look expensive."
"Is he?"
"Yes."
Mara swallowed. "Bad expensive or worth-it expensive?"
"Those are not different in here."
Ronan heard enough to smile. He had already cut one contestant across the circle, not deeply, but enough for the scoreboard to crown him with fresh red light. "You can keep your shaking boy, nurse. I will take the door."
Behind him, the safe door displayed two options: KILL BONUS ACCESS in red, TEAM-SAVE REVIEW in green. The red option glowed brighter, easier, closer. The green option was locked behind three blank witness marks.
Tavi pressed his palm to the glass. "Cassia, don't spend anything on me."
The first time he had asked if he was dead. Now he understood enough to bargain with his own life. Cassia hated the arena for teaching him that quickly.
"You do not get to make the Bell's argument for it," she said.
The exchange landed in the watching crowd. A few contestants looked away from the red door. Not many, but enough.
The Bell noticed. "Warning. Preserving a disputed black tag requires personal reset debt. Debt may include tremor, hearing loss, borrowed pain, or lost action seconds."
Ronan wiped his knife on his sleeve. "It is telling you the price."
"It tells prices when it wants a sale."
"And you think refusing the sale makes you noble?"
"I think accepting the right cost makes the next room possible, and save-credit is the only door it hates."
Cassia crossed the duel circle. The red numbers over Ronan's head brightened as she entered striking range. The Bell wanted him to attack her because a kill would settle the round neatly. Mara understood a heartbeat later.
"Ronan," Mara called, "if you hit her, you lose two seconds to confirmation."
He froze with the knife half raised.
Cassia did not waste the gap. She pressed her shaking hand to the blank witness mark beside the green door. The panel bit her palm with cold teeth. Pain flashed up her arm, not sharp, not medical, but system-made and intimate. Tavi's tag steadied on green.
The first witness mark filled with Cassia's name.
Mara stepped to the second before anyone could stop her. "I confirm Tavi is breathing and corrected."
The panel took her voice instead of blood. The second mark filled.
The third stayed blank.
Ronan laughed, but unease had entered it. "You are one saint short."
Tavi pushed himself upright behind the partition. "Can I witness myself?"
The Bell answered at once. "Self-witness denied for disputed saves."
The crowd relaxed. The Bell had restored the shape it preferred: Cassia short, Ronan ahead, the red door shining.
Then the contestant Ronan had cut lifted his hand from the floor. Blood ran down his wrist. "I witness," he said.
Ronan turned on him. "I let you live."
"No," the man said, voice thin but clear. "You left me useful."
Mara's eyes flashed toward Cassia. Leverage changed again, and this time it came from someone the kill bonus had failed to finish.
The wounded man slapped the third mark. The green door opened.
Ronan lunged for the red access at the same time. His scoreboard crowned him: KILL BONUS CONFIRMED. A red bridge of light appeared under his feet, racing toward a private exit.
Cassia dragged Tavi through the green door as the reset tremor took her whole arm. The cost made her knees buckle. Mara caught her before she fell, and the wounded witness stumbled after them.
Ronan's red bridge stopped one pace short of the same door.
"Rank privilege denied," the Host Bell said, no longer delighted. "Safe route requires living witness count."
Ronan stared through the closing glass at Cassia. For the first time, he looked less angry than hungry for an explanation he despised.
The safe door sealed behind three breathing people and printed its next demand across the inner wall.
THREE LIVING WITNESSES REQUIRED FOR ROOM TRANSFER.
Cassia's hand would not stop shaking.
