West Bursary Hall served breakfast through a brass grille, and Kellan's meal seal failed loudly enough for every hungry scholarship student in line to hear. The counter ward flashed red around his wrist, locked his tray in place, and printed DEFAULTED EXPULSION DEBT across the little tile where porridge should have appeared.
Lyra Senn looked up from the bursary counter with a stamp already in her hand. "Kellan Vale. Expelled debtors do not draw meals."
"My lien has not matured."
"Your expulsion order posted yesterday."
"Posted," Kellan said, keeping one hand on the tray so the counter could not retract it. "Not closed."
The students behind him went silent in the practical way of people trying not to be included. Breakfast steam rolled through the grille. Kellan could smell oats, salt, and the fried onions reserved for funded students. Hunger made the red letters on the counter pulse at the edge of his sight.
Lyra tapped the stamp against her blotter. "Move aside or I add obstruction."
"Add it after you show the acceleration order."
Her brows drew together. Lyra was not noble. That made her more dangerous at the counter, not less. She had survived by enforcing every line before anyone accused her of softness.
"You do not have standing to challenge."
Kellan put the Foundation receipt on the brass lip between them. "I have an appeal basis."
The words did not open the grille, but they slowed her stamp. "That strip should have been destroyed."
"It was not."
"Possession of academy records after expulsion is another charge."
"Then record that charge with the time." Kellan pushed the Black Ledger forward, cover down, old leather hiding its marks. "I am asking why my meal seal defaulted before the hearing closed."
Lyra stared at the book as if it were a stain spreading across her counter. "That is not a bursary form."
"No. This is." He tapped the receipt. "The default notice says my meal reserve accelerated nine minutes before Dean Marrow struck the hearing rod. Your office charged breakfast before I was expelled."
"Impossible."
It was the wrong answer. Not cruel, not dismissive. Afraid.
Kellan opened the Black Ledger just enough for the receipt to touch the first page. The counter ward hummed. Ash ink crawled into view.
MEAL SEAL DEFAULT.
AUTHORIZATION: LYRA SENN.
TIME: NINE MINUTES BEFORE CLOSURE.
SEAL PRESSURE: DEAN'S DISCRETIONARY LINE.
Lyra snatched her stamp off the blotter. Her face lost color under the bursary lamps. "I did not authorize before closure."
"Your seal says you did."
"My seal was in the cabinet until the lunch hour."
"Then someone used it."
That changed the leverage between them. Lyra was no longer looking at a debtor trying to steal breakfast. She was looking at her own name on a premature order.
The grille clerk beside her whispered, "Prefect Senn, call security."
Lyra's hand closed around the stamp. "Quiet."
Kellan heard the risk in that single word. If she called security, the bursary could bury both the forged timing and his meal claim. If she did nothing, her seal remained attached to an illegal acceleration. The Black Ledger warmed under his palm, eager in a way that made his teeth ache.
"I am not asking you to clear my tuition," he said. "I am asking for the meal seal to follow the order date."
"You think that sounds modest?"
"I think it sounds cheaper than explaining why West Bursary accelerated a scholarship lien before the Expulsion Court finished."
The clerk beside Lyra went still. Kellan had not raised his voice, but the phrase Expulsion Court carried through the line. Jasper Orr, passing with a rank-board cartridge under one arm, slowed near the archway. He looked at the red default on Kellan's tray and then at Lyra's stamp.
Lyra saw him too.
"One meal," she said.
"Until the lien matures."
"One meal," she repeated, but the stamp moved to a different square. Not charity. Temporary procedural hold. The brass counter swallowed the red letters and printed: BREAKFAST RELEASED PENDING TIMESTAMP REVIEW.
The tray unlocked. A bowl appeared, thinner than everyone else's, but real. Kellan's stomach cramped so hard he nearly doubled over.
Damian Veyr entered while Kellan was still holding the tray. The Veyr heir carried a porcelain cup from the funded dining room and did not bother hiding his amusement.
"Breakfast litigation," Damian said. "I admire the scale of your ambition."
Kellan picked up the bowl. His fingers shook, but he did not spill it. "Your guarantee was exhausted before my exam."
Damian's cup stopped halfway to his mouth.
Lyra looked between them. That was the second shift in the room, and Kellan felt it click into place. He had not proved Damian's fraud publicly. Not yet. But he had made the bursary prefect hear the word guarantee before Damian could prepare a smile around it.
Damian recovered by turning to Lyra. "Prefect Senn, my house expects the academy to keep debtors from harassing officers."
Lyra stamped Kellan's receipt copy with a tiny review mark. "Then your house may file at window four."
It was almost nothing. It was also the first time anyone with a stamp had refused to move for Damian.
Kellan took the marked receipt. The Black Ledger wrote Lyra's seal beside the meal default in thin black script, not clearing it, only preserving it.
From the rear office, another bursary clerk hurried out with a folded order and a strip of red twine.
"Prefect," the clerk said, breathless. "Dorm seizure for Vale. Immediate inventory lien."
Kellan knew before the paper opened. The signature at the bottom would be his.
Lyra broke the seal and read it. Her eyes flicked once to his hand.
"Mr. Vale," she said, very carefully, "when did you authorize your own trunk for collateral?"
