Kellan hides in the damaged library vault and learns that Damian's exam solution was paid with someone else's coll...
The library lock bit Kellan's palm before midnight, rejecting the dead student seal in his skin and spitting blue sparks across the service door. Behind him, bursary prefects were searching the corridor for expelled debtors. Ahead, the Broken Stacks smelled of wet vellum, cracked wardstone dust, and every record Asterfall Academy preferred to forget.
Kellan pressed the black ledger against the lock. "You opened in court. Open now."
The cover stayed cold.
The lock chimed once, preparing to call a clerk. Kellan fumbled in his sleeve and found the only thing he had managed to steal back from the Expulsion Court: the scorched receipt strip from his Foundation Calculus station. It listed ink, slate, examination time, and his failed answer sequence. It did not list Damian Veyr's spell.
The Black Ledger woke when the receipt touched it.
A thin column of ash ink slid down the page. ENTRY POINT ACCEPTED.
The lock clicked open.
Kellan fell through and pulled the door shut just as two prefect lamps crossed the outer hall. His hand trembled so badly the receipt nearly tore. Every muscle wanted food, sleep, and the luxury of being safely angry later. The lien countdown had taken his meal seal first; hunger made the shelves sway.
"Kellan?"
He spun. Mira Quill crouched behind a collapsed catalog cabinet with a stack of unauthorized copy papers tied under one arm. Her ward-scribe spectacles were cracked at the bridge, repaired with thread.
"You cannot be here," she whispered.
"I know."
"No. I mean the library lock records expelled entry as trespass. That turns your scholarship lien into bonded service."
"It opened."
Mira looked at the old book in his grip, then at the door. "Locks do not get generous."
Kellan spread the Foundation receipt on a dry patch of floor. "The exam was wrong."
"Everyone knows."
"Knowing does not buy an appeal."
That stopped her. She set down the copy papers and knelt opposite him. In the weak green glow from the emergency wardstone, her face sharpened from fear into work. Mira survived the bursary by treating paperwork like weather: dangerous, predictable, never personal until it killed you.
"Show me," she said.
Kellan laid the Black Ledger beside the receipt. The page filled with columns he had never learned in any class: spell output, aether source, collateral, guarantor, maturity date. His own answer had been charged to his scholarship reserve at a normal student rate. Then a second trail split from the ninth sequence.
Damian's name appeared in Veyr blue.
Mira sucked in a breath. "That is not on the exam copy."
"It was not on anything until I touched the receipt."
She leaned closer. "It says his solution drew from a scholarship reserve."
"Mine?"
"No." Mira traced the line without touching the page. "A pooled reserve. The kind West Bursary uses to cover exam materials for students who cannot pay in advance."
Kellan laughed once, quietly and without humor. "He bought a perfect answer with poor students' collateral."
"Not bought. Routed." Mira's eyes moved faster. "If this is real, the spell finished under Damian's rank but the cost settled against a reserve meant for scholarship failures. That would make your failure useful. They needed someone to carry the deficit."
The word carry made his stomach twist. The court had not only erased him. It had made him the container for someone else's price.
The library door chimed again. A clerk's key scraped at the outer lock.
Mira snatched the Foundation receipt. "They will burn this first."
"I need it."
"You need three copies, two seals, and one person who can swear the original existed before they accuse you of making it." She shoved a blank copy sheet into his hand. "Hold this flat."
"Mira, if they catch you helping me."
"Then I will be charged the copying fee." Her mouth tightened. "If they catch you without a copy, you lose the appeal before it exists."
That was leverage, not comfort. Kellan held the sheet while she drew a ward-scribe square with a bit of dull silver chalk. The chalk sparked where it crossed the receipt's burn mark. Mira whispered a copying charm, not strong, not elegant, but exact. The paper drank the receipt's lines one by one.
The Black Ledger added another entry.
COPY SEAL: MIRA QUILL.
RISK ACCEPTED: LIBRARY ACCESS LOCK.
Kellan looked up. "It named you."
"Then it had better spell my name correctly." Mira's hand shook only after the copy finished. She tucked the duplicate inside her sleeve and handed Kellan the original. "Listen to me. You do not wave that book at Marrow. You file a narrow appeal. One receipt. One irregular debit. One request for audit basis."
"You sound like Professor Crowe."
"Crowe lost tenure because she believed rules mattered after nobles finished with them." Mira tied her papers with sharp jerks. "Try sounding like her if you want to stay alive."
The clerk's key turned. Kellan and Mira slid behind the cabinet as the service door opened. A bursary clerk stepped in with a lantern and a disposal tray already warm with blue flame.
"Foundation receipts from expulsion docket," the clerk muttered. "Burn before morning review."
Mira's fingers closed around Kellan's wrist before he could move. "Not yet," she breathed.
The clerk fed three strips into the tray. Fire ate them clean. Then he frowned at the stack.
"One missing."
The Black Ledger pulsed against Kellan's ribs. Fresh ink spread across the inside cover where only he could see it.
VEYR GUARANTEE: EXHAUSTED THREE EXAMS PRIOR.
Kellan stopped feeling hungry. He felt, for the first time since the hearing rod fell, dangerous.
