Kellan is publicly expelled after a Foundation Calculus exam shows impossible failure marks and immediate tuition...
Kellan Vale stood on the black tile of the Expulsion Court with his scholarship ribbon cut in half at his feet and his failed Foundation Calculus slate hanging above him on the Brass Rank Board. The board had not merely lowered his rank. It had burned a red line through his name, posted an immediate tuition default, and begun ticking down the minutes before his dorm key died.
Dean Alastor Marrow lifted the silver hearing rod. "Kellan Vale. Foundation score: thirteen. Required minimum: seventy. Scholarship lien accelerated for academic fraud and unpaid tuition."
"Fraud?" Kellan tasted blood where he had bitten his cheek during the exam. "My ward equation held for six turns. Damian Veyr copied the same curve after mine failed."
Damian lounged beside the noble benches in a blue Veyr coat, clean gloves folded over one knee. His score glowed at ninety-eight. "Failure makes everyone generous with accusations."
The court scribes scratched the verdict into the expulsion ledger. A brass clerk stamped Kellan's meal seal void, then his library access, then the small square of dorm credit that represented every blanket and shirt he owned. Each stamp struck harder than a fist because each one was procedural. Nobody had to shove him out when the academy could make every door forget his hand.
Marrow angled the hearing rod toward the board. "The academy does not debate with debtors who cannot meet the floor."
"Then let me see the calculation audit," Kellan said.
A few students shifted on the benches, not with pity. Scholarship students knew better than to waste pity where prefects could see it. The funded students watched Damian to learn whether laughter was permitted.
Marrow's expression stayed smooth. "Foundation marks are final at closure."
"The closure bell has not rung."
That earned Kellan Damian's attention. The Veyr heir stood and walked close enough for the blue fire woven through his cuff to warm Kellan's raw knuckles. "You want another minute? Buy one."
"With what?" Kellan asked.
Damian smiled. "Exactly."
The hearing rod came down. The rank-board gear clicked. Kellan's name dropped from the student column into the debtor strip below the first-year list. A scholarship lien unfolded under it in tiny gold script: TUITION, MEALS, DORM, LIBRARY, FUTURE SERVICE. The last term pulsed, hungry and patient.
Something under the clerk's table answered.
It was only an old ledger, half-buried among rejected forms, its black cover warped by damp and heat. Yet when the board posted Damian's perfect exam mark, a second line crawled across the dead leather in ash-colored ink.
DEBIT: FOUNDATION SEQUENCE NINE.
Kellan stopped breathing.
The line was not on the court ledger. No clerk reacted. No student saw it. But the hidden entry continued, each word cutting itself into the page as if written by a hand too angry to wait.
CASTER OF RECORD: DAMIAN VEYR.
COLLATERAL SOURCE: SCHOLARSHIP RESERVE MISAPPLIED.
BENEFICIARY: VEYR RANK ADVANCEMENT.
Kellan bent before he understood why, fingers closing on the discarded book. The moment his thumb touched the cover, pain lanced up his wrist. Not a spell's bright burn, not the clean pressure of a classroom sigil. This felt like a bill coming due in bone.
Marrow's gaze sharpened. "Put down academy property."
"This was in the discard pile."
"Discarded property remains property."
"Then record it," Kellan said. His voice came out steadier than his knees. "If you are seizing a debtor's evidence, record the seizure."
The word evidence changed the room more than shouting would have. The brass clerk paused with the dorm stamp halfway raised. Jasper Orr, the rank-board clerk, looked at the black ledger and then quickly away.
Damian's smile thinned. "There is no evidence in trash."
The ledger opened under Kellan's hand. A page that should have been blank wrote his name with a neat registrar's flourish.
KELLAN VALE.
STATUS: EXPELLED SCHOLARSHIP DEBTOR.
ACCESS REQUEST: FORBIDDEN AUDIT.
The court lights guttered. Kellan's nose began to bleed, one hot drop landing on the page. The ink drank it.
Marrow stepped off the dais for the first time. "Mr. Vale, hand me that book."
Kellan saw the leverage then, thin as thread but real. Marrow did not sound offended. He sounded alarmed.
"Am I a student?" Kellan asked.
"You are expelled."
"Then I cannot be ordered under student discipline." Kellan shut the book against his chest. "Am I bonded service?"
Marrow's jaw tightened. "Not until the lien matures."
"Then I am neither under your classroom order nor your service writ for the next twenty-three minutes."
Damian moved first, reaching for the ledger with a duelist's speed. Kellan stumbled back into the rank-board shadow. The hidden page flashed once through the cover, and Damian snatched his hand away as if stung.
For a heartbeat, blue script appeared over Damian's glove: GUARANTEE OVERDRAWN.
Kellan saw it. Damian saw Kellan see it.
The Veyr heir recovered with a laugh that arrived a fraction late. "Enjoy your twenty-three minutes, debtor."
The board gave another click. Kellan's dorm access dropped to nineteen minutes. His meal seal was already black. His rank was gone.
But under his bleeding hand, the Black Ledger wrote one more line.
FORBIDDEN AUDIT ACCESS GRANTED.
